RECAP: Toluca vs América

Our Aguilas manage to hold on to 1st place as they managed to get out 'El Infierno' with a 2-2 tie with Oribe Peralta scoring a double. For the fans, the game's intensity appeared as a preview to what fans can expect to see in the liguilla within a couple of weeks.

(Imago 7)

America started the first half by controlling the flow of the game by playing mostly from the midfield on into Toluca's area. They also took several opportunities by knocking on Toluca's door for a goal. Most of the shots came from Miguel Layún that were from outside the area. The offense was mostly guided through Sambueza who would help get the ball moving and create plays. Toluca didn't seem to have control on their half of the field which infuriated Cardozo to make him call up his subs to begin warming up for a potential 1st half sub.
One of Toluca's chances at goal came in the 17th minute when they were given a corner kick. Though that was stopped as Muñoz came out to grab the ball and quickly put back into play by throwing it to Peralta. By passing the ball to Peralta, he begins the counter attack by taking the ball from América's box to the halfway line where he then passes it to Sambueza. Sambueza receives the ball, takes it along the sideline, and then gives a through ball at an angle where Peralta takes a one shot touch gets it past Talavera and into the back of the net.

(Imago 7)

The game intensified in the 23rd minute as Sambueza was assisted out of the field after a suffering an injury. This gave Toluca an advantage of playing with an extra man until América got their sub in for Sambueza. With having an extra man Toluca began playing on América's side of the field and in the 25th minute Toluca was awarded with a penalty. Pablo Velázquez stepped up to take the PK for Toluca. Velázquez shot it to the right of the goal where Muñoz was able to dive to it, but unable to get a hand on it.

(Mexsport)

The second half began and the game started sway more in Toluca's favor by the way they were playing. They had more control of the ball and began taking more shots at América's goal. The game fell into their full control when Brizuela played the ball into the area. He passed it to Lobos who gives it back to Brizuela to take a shot on goal. His is unable to get a proper foot on the ball and loses it, but it luckily appears at the feet of Velázquez who quickly strikes it in the net to give Toluca a 2-1 lead.

(Mexsport)

Everything seemed to be going Toluca's way and it looked as if there would be a new leader of the Apertura tournament. During the last fifteen minutes the game went back and forth with both sides trying to find another goal. Toluca wanted to up their lead while América tried tying the game. América's tying goal could've came in the 87th minute where Paul Aguilar headed the ball towards Toluca's net. The goal seemed certain because Talavera was falling back and it looked impossible for him to put a hand on it, but with his great effort he was able to tap the ball out for a corner.
Arroyo covers the corner kick and the ball gets scrambled around in the area. Toluca's defenders fail to clear the ball from the area and it rolls to Peralta's feet where he fixes himself and shots it a high angle to tie the game in the 88th minute of the game.
After the goal the game continued for 5 more minutes until it the ref blew the final whistle at the 93rd minute. With the result of 2-2, América remains on top of the table with 31 points and Toluca sit second with 29 points.

PREVIEW: Toluca vs América

Today our first place Aguilas visit the Bombonera to take on Toluca who sit second on the league table. This game is an interesting one because the winner between the two can secure the number one spot for the liguilla. Currently América sit on top of the Aperura table with 30 points while Toluca are second with 28 points.
This game serves as a good preparation for what both teams can expect to see in the liguilla. Toluca are coming back home from an away win at border when they defeated Xolos Tijuana 1-0. Though the week before that they suffered a loss at home by the hands of León losing 3-2.
For América the last two games haven't gone their way. They tied last week against chivas in the Super Clásico and lost the week before that against Queretaro. If they wanna pick up their confidence and build momentum going into the liguilla, then it should start today.
Today's kickoff is scheduled to be at 12:00pm Central Time and can be seen on Univisión.
¡Vamos América!

PREVIEW: Clásico Nacional

Just about 24 hours to go before the Clásico Nacional kicks off at the Azteca Stadium and here a some notes about how both teams come into place before the game on Saturday evening. Both teams are looking to get a win in hopes of bettering their standings in the league. For América's they sit at top of the table with 29 points and hope to finish off the Apertura regular season strong and go into the liguilla as Super Líder. For chivas they sit in second to last place with 11 points and are at the bottom of the percentage table fighting relegation.

Mohamed understands the pressure from the fans for losing the last two clásicos against Pumas and Cruz Azul. He realizes that those games are in the past, but knows that he can turn things around by winning the Clásico Nacional against chivas. He knows that it's an important game that means a lot to the fans and hopes to bring joy to them by winning on Saturday. Mohamed was asked if by beating chivas and adding fuel to their fire with relegation will bring additional joy? He simply said no, he made it clear that the only thing that him and the team are focused on are winning the clásico and staying on top of the league table. Guadalajara's issue doesn't really interest him because that's more their issue than América's.

The game is scheduled for Saturday November 1st at 6:00pm Central Time and can be seen on Univisión.

PREVIEW: 'Chucho' Benítez Tribute

A lot of domestic leagues around the world including Liga MX are taking a break this weekend due to FIFA's international friendlies. Fortunately for us Americanistas we are going to be able to see club action as our club faces Santos Laguna. The game is scheduled to be played at the Estadio Azteca at 5:00pm CT. Fans can catch the game on realtime through www.RojaDirecta.com or wait to see the replay at 8:00pm CT on Univisión Deportes.
The game is honor of the late striker Christian 'Chucho' Benítez who passed away last summer in Qatar. Chucho played a vital role for both clubs as a striker where he helped lead América to the 2013 Clausura Championship and Santos to their 2008 Clausura Championship. Aside from winning two Clausura Championships, he also won four Liga MX's Golden Boots. One of them was from the 2010 Apertura season with Santos and the last three were a three peat with América (2012 Clausura, 2012 Apertura, and 2013 Clausura).

América's head directors are hoping for a good turnout today as they set the tickets to a reasonable price and the proceeds will go to Chucho's family.

RECAP: Club América vs Monarcas Morelia

América continues unbeaten in the Apertura after beating Morelia at home with a late goal from Oribe Peralta making the final score 3-2.

América played their fifth game of the season yesterday at home against their television rival Monarcas Morelia. Not much action was seen in the first half between the 2 though several shots were taking, but left wide on goal. One exciting moment in the first half came when Luis Gabriel Rey heads the ball to Oribe Peralta to score a spectacular bicycle kick to make the score 1-0, but the linesman ruled it offside. The 1st goal of the game came at the 38th minute when América had a free kick in front of the opposing goal. Rubens Sambueza goes up to the spot and instead of taking a shot he gives a through ball to Paul Aguilar where he takes the ball deep into the area and at the last moment centers the ball to Pablo Aguilar where he heads it in the back of the net making the game 1-0 in favor of América.

The second half started and within the first 7 minutes Morelia scores their first goal of the season and the equalizer putting the game 1-1. Carlos Morales from Morelia centered the ball to the farthest post of América's goal where Duvier Riascos was left unmarked by the azulcrema defense to heads the ball in the goal to tie the game.
The tie would last a short while as Sambueza takes a shot from outside of the area with his left foot to make the score 2-1 for América. After Sambueza's goal América continued to try and find more goals as they kept the shots knocking onto Morelia's goal. A clear goal game from Luis Gabriel Rey with hopes of putting the score up 3-1, but Carlos Rodríguez did an extraordinary job of blocking the shot.

Morelia is given a corner kick in the 74th minute, the ball is headed by a player from Morelia to put the ball at the feet of David Depetris to tie the game up at 2-2.
Around the the 77th Minute Mohamed makes an offensive change by taking out Arroyo and replacing him with Martín Zúñiga to see if he can make the score 3-2 for América. Within minutes of coming in Zúñiga takes a shot on goal, but it's denied by Rodríguez.
Towards the end of the game the 4th official adds 4 minutes of stoppage time to the clock. Within one of the last plays of the game Luis "Quick" Mendoza centers the ball to Martín Zúñiga in the Morelia area. Zúñiga controls it briefly, but a defender from Morelia comes from behind and clears the ball out insuring he's prevented anything from happening. Though he taps it lightly where the ball stays in the area and falls right in front of Peralta. Rodríguez comes out to try and prevent Oribe's shot from going in, but Peralta shoots the ball between Rodríguez's legs and puts the final score 3-2 in favor of América.

Preview: Club América vs Monarcas Morelia

Today is the 5th game of the Apertura Season and América hosts Morelia today in what some fans consider the Clásico Televisora. For this game América hopes to continue on top of the league table while Monarcas tries earning their first 3 points of the season.
So far for América things have been going great for them this season as they are 4 for 4 with 12 points in the standings. They hope to continue their flow and get 5 for 5, but to do so they'll have to make a few adjustments. One of the main adjustments is up top where they are now without their star striker Raúl Jiménez. Jiménez departed this past week to Spain to join capital side Atlético de Madrid on a six season contract. We're likely to see Luis Gabriel Rey accompanying Oribe Peralta with chances of Martín Zúñiga coming in as sub.
Paolo Goltz and Rubens Sambueza also return to the starting 11 this week. Goltz returns after receiving 2 yellow cards against Puebla a couple of weeks ago and Sambueza returns after suffering an injury that kept him from seeing first team action.
Morelia isn't afraid of playing in the Azecta as they are familiar with picking up wins there in the past. Though for Comizzo a win is a must if he plans to stay as head coach for the Michoacanos. With a record of 2 ties and 2 defeats, Morelia sit in second to last place of the Apertura table with only 2 points. Though they have the worse offense they've managed to have a decent defense with only allowing in 6 goals when compared to Chiapas and León who have 10 goals against them and sit in 5th and 6th place.
The last time they faced each other in the Estadio Azecta América won 3-1 with goals from Luis Mendoza and Raúl Jiménez while Edgar Andrade score for Monarcas.

The game starts at 5:00pm Central Time and will be showed on Univisión Deportes. If you don't have cable or satellite you can also catch the game on RojaDirecta.Me

PREVIEW: Tigres UANL vs Club América

América looks forward to adding another win to their 2014 Apertura season record as they make the trip to Monterrey to face Tigres in the Estadio Universitario (Volcan). Currently América sits at the top of the league table with 9 point while Tigres lay in 5th with 5 points.

Las Aguilas didn't look too convincing after their first 2 wins against León and Xolos. With the way they had been playing people began to think that 'Turco' Mohamed's methods of coaching weren't functioning for the club. People also questioned Jiménez because of how he's been seen as "distracted" about his possible transfer to Europe. Though last week they were able to turn things around and make people believe that they have all of the capabilities to be a contender for the Liga MX Apertura Championship when they defeated Puebla 4-0. Jiménez also demonstrated to the critics that he's not distracted when he scored 3 of the 4 goals.

Although in 5th place Tigres has also had a good, but slow start to their Apertura campaign. The reigning Copa MX champion started the season with a tie against Atlas, a 4-2 win over León, and another tie against Xolos. A win against América could bump them up between 2nd place (depending on other results) and raise their confidence to their slow start.

The game will be shown on channel Univision Deportes at 7:00pm Central Time.

RECAP: Puebla vs América

Yesterday's game versus Puebla built up a lot of hype for the spectators. It mainly circulated around América facing it's former idol Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Blanco facing the club that gave him his opportunity to play professional. Whichever way you saw it, for Americanistas this wasn't the game to miss.
(MexSport)

The game was played in Puebla at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc and the fans saw action right from the start. Even though the stadium was dominantly filled with América fans it was Puebla who started off strong by taking shots on target and hoping to bring an end to América's two game winning streak. Though at the 16th minute the game saw its first goal in favor of América. Michael Arroyo crossed the ball into the area where Raúl Jiménez barely makes contact with it at the far post in an angle that seemed almost impossible to score putting the game 1-0. The goal didn't kill Puebla's hopes as they continued taking shots to find their first goal.

(MexSport)

The Second half began and Puebla kept taking shots on goal in order to tie the game. Cuauhtémoc came in the 60th minute replacing Wilberto Cosme with hopes of raising Pubela's offensive momentum. Though the games defining moment came in the 62nd moment when Mauricio Romero committed a foul on Oribe Peralta inside the penalty area. Jiménez stepped up to take the shot and tucked it away smoothly in the bottom right of the goal making the score 2-0 for América. About 10 minutes later Jiménez filters a ball to Peralta, he cuts the ball to his right to remove a defender and then takes a shot with his left to make the score 3-0 and making his debut goal for América. The fourth and final goal was similar to Oribe's and came in the 76th minute where Jiménez cuts the ball and hits it with the outside of his right foot to put the score 4-0.

RECAP: América v Xolos

América debuted at home with a win over northern side Xolos de Tijuana with a 2-1 victory. Days leading up to the match there was a lot of criticism around Raúl Jiménez saying that he hasn't been performing well due to his distraction about his possible move to Europe with Porto FC. It bothered 'Turco' Mohamed to even question if Jiménez was still going to be fully devoted to América or just sit back and relax. Fortunately for Jiménez he was able to silence the critics with a goal that would equalize the score in the second half.

The game started with several shots from both sides, but the action didn't start until the 17th minute where Paul Aguilar committed a foul on Tijuana's Henry Martin inside the penalty area. Juan Arango stepped up to take the penalty kick. Moisés Muñoz tried stopping the ball from entering, but he was unable to reach it in time. América had an important opportunity to make the score 1-1 with what could've been Oribe Peralta's debut goal for the club, but it was ruled offside. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of Xolos.
(mediotiempo)

The second half started with 'Turco' making 2 offensive subs by putting in Raúl Jiménez and Michael Arroyo who saw his América debut. If América wanted to change the score then they had to do it early in the second half so that they could have enough time to do so. Mohamed had no problem with doing that and it successfully worked when Jiménez received a through ball from Paul Aguilar and chipped the ball over Saucedo to even the score at 1-1.
(mediotiempo)
Things turned unfortunate for Tijuana when their goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo got injured in the 78th minute. Farías is forced to use one of his subs for Saucedo and Manuel Lajud comes in to make his Xolos debut. América kept trying to find their second possible goal, but were unable due to some missed shots and decent saves from Lajud. It seemed as if the game was going to end in a draw until Rubens Sambueza tries a final play by sending the ball to the far post where it was founded by Pablo Aguilar and headed to hit Lajud's legs and went into the net giving América the 2-1 victory.

Preview: Club América vs Xolos de Tijuana 7/26/14

Las Aguilas del América started the season on a good note last week when they defeated the defending champions León. With Osvaldo Martinez scoring a double and with a great performance by Moisés Muñoz by blocking several shots and a penalty kick from Boselli.
This week they play their first home game at the Estadio Azteca (5pm Central Time) when they face Xolos de Tijuana. After beating the defending champion, América looks to keep the rhythm by getting another win over Tijuana and move up in the rankings.
Meanwhile for the border-town team Xolos didn't start their Apertura campaign on a good note after suffering a 1-0 loss to Puebla at home. The team hopes that they can reverse things and jump from 15th place to one of the top 7 spots in the table. Though in order for them to do that, then they'll have to beat América at home. Something that shouldn't seem hard for them to do seeing that they beat them once before when 'Turco' was in charge of the 'Perros Aztecas'.

RECAP: León vs América 7/19/14

Club América started their 2014 Apertura season on a right note as they beat León 2-1 at the Nou Camp in León, Guanajuato. The game began with León playing offensively from the get go with shots knocking on América's goal, but Moisés Muñoz responded by denying any entrance. The first goal for América came in the 19th minute when Oribe Peralta brought the ball into the area after a mistake by Edwin Hernandez. Ignacio González slides in attempt to get the ball out of Peralta's possession while William Yarbrough closes in, but it bounces to the side in front of Osvaldo Martínez for him to put it in the back of the net for América.
A little after the first goal León had the chance to tie the game at 1-1 with a goal from Carlos 'Gullit' Peña, though unfortunately for León the play was called offside by the linesman. The score remained 1-0 in favor of América.
América's second goal came in the 37th minute where Osvaldo Martínez had a free-kick 35 meters from the net. His goal came with the assist of Yarbrough who fell into the net with the ball in his hands. Yarbrough tried tossing the ball out of the net in order to prevent the second goal from happening, but it was too late.
León's only goal came in the 85th minute after two penalty attempts. The first pk came from a foul committed by Juan Carlos Valenzuela. Mauro Boselli stepped up to take the shot, but it was denied by Muñoz. Unfortunately right after the block another foul was committed by Pablo Aguilar and it gave León another opportunity to score. Boselli stepped up again and this time was able to score and cut América's lead by one. Time wasn't on León's side after scoring their 1st goal and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Las Aguilas.

Club América's 2014 Summer Transfers

During the offseason Club América took action by rearranging their team by acquiring, transferring, and releasing players.

Players Released:-Aquivaldo Mosquera, after five years in Coapa the former América defender returns back to Pachuca for the 2014 Apertura Season. This seems like a good move for him since he's returning to a team that he played for before, but also will be serving under the same coach from the last time he was there.

- Adrian Aldrete, served the club for two years from 2012-2014. The defender leaves América and joins a team that has a defense well equipped with players like César Ibáñez, Néstor Araujo, and the legendary goalkeeper Oswaldo Sánchez.

-Francisco Rodríguez, a defender who helped América earn their 11th championship joins cross-city rivals Cruz Azul. He was criticized when he arrived to América for the 2013 Clausura season because of how he use to play for arch-rival chivas. Though he was able to silence the criticizers after winning the 2013 Clausura. Though things did not go so well for him towards the end of the 2014 Clausura where his actions on the pitch began to anger the 'Azul-Crema' fans and it quickly made them forget about his loyal service to the institution.

-Juan Carlos Medina, the center midfielder played an important role for the América offense. Some can overlook him when compared to other offensive stars like Raúl Jiménez, Luis Gabriel Rey, and the late 'Chucho' Benítez, but he served as an important vital part of the team just much as the other offensive players. He returns to his origins of Atlas after playing 6 years with Club América.

Players Loaned:-Carlos López, the 3rd string goalkeeper and 2011 u20 international gets loaned out Morelia. The chances of him seeing playing time with América were slim. The reason for him not playing wasn't because he lacked skill or experience, but because of the competition he had with Moises Muñoz and Hugo Gonzalez.

-Andrés Ríos, the Argentine forward didn't see much playing time and hasn't lived up to the expectations that many fans were hoping for. For this upcoming Apertura season he'll be playing for Leones Negros as they try to make an impact in the first division after winning the Ascenso playoff promotion against Tecos.

-Andrés Andrade, another forward who wasn't able to make an impact with club or see much playing time either. The Colombian was brought in by Miguel Herrera for the 2013 Apertura to help reinforce the attacking offense after the departure of the late Chuco Benítez to Qatar. This season he'll be playing for Jaguares de Chiapas.

-Antonio López, the veteran forward at América still hasn't received the proper playing time he deserves. This season he'll be providing his services for the newly relocated Mineros de Zacatecas.

Players Acquired:
-Oribe Peralta, the "handsome" goal scorer that won everyone's hearts when he scored the 2 goals that brought México to their first Olympic gold medal in 2012 will be wearing the blue and yellow this season. At the end of the Apetura season there was talks that América's arch-rival chivas were interested in purchasing him. Though unfortunately for them América jumped the gun and signed Oribe Peralta.

-Martín Zúñiga, the forward from the Club América youth system returns after his successful loan with Chiapas and returns to earn a spot in the starting 11 for Mohamed.

-Paolo Goltz, the Argentine defender leaves CA Lanús and returns to the services of his former coach. Goltz was one of the first players that América contracted to come and reinforce the defense. He played for Mohamed at Huracán knows what kind of defense 'Turco' is asking for. Along with both Pablo and Paul Aguilar, Juan Carlos Valenzuela, Miguel Layún, and Erik Pimentel the defense should perform better than last season.

-Gonzalo Díaz, another Argentine center midfielder comes from Godoy Cruz Antonia Tomba comes in seems to be the replacement for Juan Carlos Medina.

-Michael Arroyo, another center midfielder who had a great performance at the World Cup with his native Ecuador also comes in as an alternative to Juan Carlos Medina. He comes from the recently relegated Atlante and was one of the few star players that were fortunate enough to stay in the Mexican 1st division.

Club América's 2014 Apertura Preview

The Apertura Season is starts on July 18th with the opening games between Querétaro vs Pumas UNAM and Xolos Tijuana facing Puebla. Club América plays on Saturday (8:06pm CT) and they open the season against the league's defending champion León. This is an intense game for the fans and players because of the 2013 Apertura Final. The final was between these two teams and it was León that came out victorious in the end earning the 6th of their 7th stars.

LAST SEASON:
Club América's performance in the 2014 Clausura was a bit of a shaky one for the team. One of the main reasons was due to the fact that Club América's coaching staff and the club's president took a leave of absence and reported to duty with the Mexican National Team. Ricardo Peláez, Miguel Herrera, and the rest of his coaching staff accepted the privilege and honor to lead México in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup.

The coach that was selected to grab the reins of Miguel 'Piojo' Herrera was Ricardo 'Turco' Mohamed. América finished the clausura in 5th place (7 Wins, 4 Ties, 6 Losses). They made it to the last 8 only to get knocked out in the quarter-finals by Santos Laguna. This was a performance unacceptable to fans of the Coapa based team who were use to the successful runs under Herrera. Many fans expected the Mohamed who helped crown Xolos their first championship, but instead left the playoff party early before it even got good.

THIS SEASON:
One of the reasons for this was that Mohamed inherited Herrera's team that was use to playing a different style than what was being asked by 'Turco'. So during the offseason Club América took action by changing the squad and acquiring players that fit Mohamed's style of play. A specific player to mention is Paolo Goltz, an Argentine defender who comes from Lanús and who is familiar with Mohamed's tactics after serving under him at Huracán.

Two other big signings that made big news this summer was the signing of Oribe Peralta and Michael Arroyo. Since the departure of the late Christian 'Chucho' Benítez, América has had some issues in having a steady scoring offense. Though with signing two of the best goal scorers from last season, América should not have an issue scoring this season with the attacking forwards they're armed with.

FINISHING IN THE APERTURA:I think that América has the potential to finish in the top four of the table and make a push to the semifinals. As mentioned before América did a lot of effort throughout the offseason to help get players that would fit into Mohamed's style. If he is able to get the team to play the way he wants them to play then we can expect to see the same success he had with Independiente winning the Copa Sudamericana in 2010 and also the 2012 Apertura success with Xolos. If he doesn't live up to his potential, then we can expect América to pick up another coach after the Apertura season.
